The position is a permanent, full-time (9-month), general funds and tenure-track to begin approximately August 2024 or as soon thereafter as possible. Review of applications will be on December 15, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.

Applicants who are ABD (all but dissertation) will be reviewed, however, degree requirements must be met by the date of appointment.

Candidates are expected to establish a productive, externally funded research program in an area of Computational Chemistry and contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching within the Chemistry Department. Qualified candidates with research interests in CO2 reduction and/or atmospheric chemistry will receive special consideration. Research that is responsive to the strategic needs of the State of Hawaii and synergizes with existing areas of interest within the department and university will also receive special consideration. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Teach assigned undergraduate courses. 
  • Direct the research activities of undergraduate and graduate students in computational chemistry.
  • Participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
  • Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity.
  • Serve on department and university committees.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  1. Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field.
  2. Demonstrated ability as a teacher.
  3. Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
  4. Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Strong research background in computational chemistry (broadly defined).
  2. At least two years of postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent).
  3. Evidence of research productivity and potential for establishing a vigorous, funded research program in computational chemistry or a closely related field.
  4. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach a majority of the following courses: General Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Computational Chemistry.
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students.
  6. Commitment to support inclusion, mutual respect, collaboration, and equity, so that people from all backgrounds feel welcome and can thrive.
  7. Research interests that are responsive to the strategic needs of the University and the State of Hawai‘i.
